I'm assuming that you are using Apple's Time Machine (TM) to make backups to this external Seagate drive, and that this drive is NOT encrypted/protected by a password ... correct?

I'm also assuming that you can successfully mount this drive on the macOS Desktop and can access with the Finder app; just not able to use it for TM ... correct?

Finally, have you been using this drive successfully for TM, but now it is not working properly ... correct?

If any/all of the above are true, see if any of the following can help:

  • Check the drive's access permissions: Select the drive, right-click, choose "Get Info," and under "Sharing & Permissions," ensure your user account has the necessary privileges.
  • Use Disk Utility's First Aid option to verify and repair the drive's file system, if required.
  • Connect the drive to another computer to see if the issue persists. This can help determine whether the problem is specific to your current system.

If none of the above steps work, it might be worth backing up any important data from the drive and then re-formatting it.

While Time Machine backup drives are made read-only by the MacOS, that would be normal, except that error message is not normal. When that error message appears informing you that the external drive is read only, that usually means that the external drive is failing or has failed. In which case it has to be replaced with a new one.
