The AirTag relies on the Apple "Find My Network" to send its location information to the Apple servers. This is where you would see it on the Find My app on your iPhone.

Only its "last known" location would be available, for up to 24 hours, if it cannot send its location to the Find My Network. How it gets to this network is by another iPhone that would be within 30-40' of it. In turn, that phone would relay that info, via a cellular or Wi-Fi connection, to the Internet.

So, until it is "discovered" by another iPhone, you will only have it last known location to work with.
