2. Home Sharing via the Apple’s own software instead (may need conversion, if not .mp4/.mov/.m4v),

For Apple TV (4th generation or later):

3. VLC on Apple TV can browse a shared folder on Mac through SMB,

4. VLC on Apple TV allows copying of limited media files to VLC’s cache space on the box (“Remote Playback”).

Alternatively you could mirror your entire Mac display as mentioned in the resource as well.
