I tried to activate this when I left the store and got a message saying it had not been activated yet, try it again that evening, and again this morning and get a message saying code is not valid

Take the gift card back to the retailer who sold it to you to get the card activated. Loss prevention policies require that the card is activated by the merchant at the time of sale. You will need to also take the receipt to prove that you purchased the gift card.
