Charging issue with MacBook Pro

I have a 2020 MacBook Pro and it keeps charging and disconnecting every few seconds making the charging beep each time. I have tried the following:

Resetting the SMC

Rotating the charger and reinserting

swapping the charger to other ports

Bought a new charging cable

and still it keeps happening.

Can anyone help?

Make sure to disconnect all other devices from the laptop in case one of them is causing a problem. Also, make sure to connect the power adapter directly to the laptop without using any adapters, docks, or hubs since they may not allow the full power of the charger to reach the laptop.

Try unplugging the Power Adapter from the electrical outlet for a minute in order to reset the power adapter's internal circuitry.

Did you try another Power Adapter as well? That is about the only other thing to try.

If none of this works, then it would indicate a hardware issue with the laptop....most likely the Logic Board although there is a chance the fault could be with the battery.

By the way....good job with all the troubleshooting steps you have already performed.

The charging contacts on the charging port may be contaminated due to liquid or debris contact. Try using a synthetic bristle brush to dust the ports. These brushes are typically found in small repair kits - nothing fancy. If that doesn’t work, a simple fix would be to replace the charging ports. Depending on the year and model of your machine, the part can be found for under $20. Just google ‘macbook model/year charging port replacement part’. If you’re handy and trust yourself, you can attempt to replace it or take it to an Apple certified shop and specifically request for this part to be replaced only. It should be a nominal charge. Hope this helps!

I had the same issue. I purchased a second charging cord for travel, but did NOT purchase another power adapter.

I had a travel adapter/wall-charger (one that allowed me to plug in several USB-C devices at one time)...

It appears there wasn't enough "charge" coming through the travel adapter, so the power kept cycling on and off.

I also had a portable adapter with me, and I plugged it into that. Worked just fine, no cycling power on and off.

Hope this helps someone.

My issue is when my MacBook is below 50% the MagSafe cycles on and off, light blinks, and ringing charging sound keeps playing when it connects/disconnects.

how would you suggest I get it repaired? I have it under manufacturer’s warranty still. I did a diagnostic test with apple support and it shows no issues. I feel like it’s gonna be hard to get Apple to replace my Logic board based on what I’ve read. These MacBooks can completely crash with 30% charge and Apple diagnostics will still show nothing is wrong… how you recommend I get it repaired? Thanks

You need to be able to show the Apple tech the issue, so make sure the battery charge level is below 50% so it will misbehave when the tech examines the laptop. In fact, if you run the Apple Diagnostics when the battery charge level is below 20%, then it may report a failure as well. You definitely want Apple to address this while the laptop is still under warranty. Make sure to take your power adapter & charging cable(s) along when you have the laptop examined.

Make sure you have disconnected all external devices except for the power adapter just in case one of them is causing a problem.

Make sure the power adapter is connected directly to the laptop since any adapters, hubs, or docks may not allow the full power of the power adapter to reach the laptop.

Also, make sure you are using the correct power adapter....it must be the same size or larger than the original power adapter which shipped with the laptop from the factory.

Are you using an actual OEM Apple power adapter?

Make sure to try all the suggestions I have made in several of my previous posts in this thread.

In addition to the tips I provided in my earlier post, here are two Apple articles for troubleshooting charging issues:

If your MagSafe cable or power adapter isn't working - Apple Support

If your USB-C power adapter isn't charging your Mac laptop - Apple Support

FYI, if you normally use a Magsafe 3 charging cable, then try using a USB-C charging cable instead.

If none of these troubleshooting tips help, then you most likely need to have the laptop repaired.
