Ask to buy and in-app purchases

Does “ask to buy” also apply to in-app purchases? I’m confused because I know you can separately disallow in-app purchases. Ideally, I’d like all purchase requests - initial app installation or in-app purchase - to come to me for approval. Can I do that simply by keeping on ask to buy?

Hi CNOCCA22,

Yes, Ask to Buy also includes in-app purchases. The last section of Prevent in-app purchases from the App Store explains.

• If children in your Family Sharing group have their own devices, use Ask to Buy to screen and approve their purchase requests.

Cheers.

Hello CNOCCA22,

Please be sure to check out all of the information outlined in the link you came from, which explains how Ask to Buy works, and instances where the family organizer won't receive an Ask to Buy request, and may be helpful: Approve what kids buy with Ask to Buy

How Ask to Buy works

With Ask to Buy, when kids want to buy or download a new item, they send a request to the family organizer. The family organizer can use their own device to approve or decline the request. For example, if a child wants to buy an app, the family organizer can see the app and decide whether to allow it.

If the family organizer approves the request and completes the purchase, the item automatically downloads to the child's device. If the family organizer declines the request, no purchase or download will take place. If a child redownloads a purchase, downloads a shared purchase, installs an update, or uses a redemption code, the family organizer won’t receive a request.

For in-app purchases, you can require a password for purchases, prevent certain types of purchases, or disable purchasing completely. This link explains the options to restrict in-app purchases and may be helpful as well: Prevent in-app purchases from the App Store

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply but unfortunately I still don’t think the answer is clear.

I just want to make sure that ask to buy includes in-purchases. I want my kids to be able to request in-app purchases and don’t want to require passwords that no one can remember.

All I want to confirm is that ask to buy includes any in-app requests my kids make. Does anyone know?

Got it very helpful. I think I got confused because of the content restriction section on in-app purchases in screentime settings. There, if you say don’t allow, does that mean that kids cannot even request an in-app purchase?

I think I want to allow kids to request in-app purchases but use ask to buy to approve the in-app purchase. Does that make sense?
