If you are trying to connect to your work network, then you need to work with your internal IT Team for assistance. The problem may be a configuration issue with the firewall or VPN which is preventing macOS clients from connecting. Or it may be an odd compatibility/bug issue of the macOS version of the Fortinet client on a specific version of macOS. Fortinet has two versions of their software....one is just the basic VPN software (best choice), while the other one includes lots of other things such as anti-virus software for one. You also need to make sure you are using the correct version of the Fortinet client which your employer knows is compatible with their current firewall & VPN setup and various versions of macOS. It is possible the IT team activate new security features and that information was never forwarded to all their users or perhaps those changes were not updated by required system updates if the laptop is being managed by your employer.

The IT department will have a contract with Fortinet and can escalate any issues if the IT department cannot identify any configuration issues with their firewall or VPN. Regardless, it is up to your employer's IT team to figure out your issue with connecting remotely.

I'm assuming your employer is using a Fortinet firewall & VPN appliance. If not, then you should be using whatever VPN software is known to be compatible with their Firewall/VPN appliance. While it is sometimes possible to use another brand of VPN client to connect, it may not always be easy or straight forward...you would definitely need some technical details from the IT team anyway to make the connection (perhaps even with the official VPN client).

Assuming this VPN is like all others I know of, you have to create an account and then login to that account.

If that fails, the proper place to ask for help is the VPN's developers as it's not an Apple product and we can't speak to the inner working of a non Apple app.

The developer's are responsible for making their product work with macOS, not the reverse.

Poisoning Internet performance:

By far the easiest way to cause poor performance, instability, overheating and crashing is to install ANY third-party speeder-uppers, Cleaners, Optimizers, or Virus scanners. or a VPN that you installed yourself.

The idea that a third party, with no special knowledge of the inner workings of MacOS, can somehow find a simple way to protect your computer — that is not already being done by MacOS itself — suggests that the MacOS developers are somehow "holding out on you". That is absurd.

You should remove any and all (other than Apple built-in) virus scanners, speeder uppers, optimizers, cleaners, App deleters or VPN packages you installed yourself, or anything of that ilk.

okay that kind of response is acceptable but the previous one? nah you're just trying to look cool

Why would you respond in such a way to a volunteer who is trying to help you. We are all users like you here. And FWIW, I agree that you need to contact your organization to which you are trying to create the VPN tunnel. Only they control the configuration required to connect to their VPN server. And to be fair, you never mentioned that your VPN was point to point to your organization's private network when you first posted.

VPN software you installed yourself is JUNK!

VPN software makers try to lure you in with a promise of additional protection. Instead, you data is concentrated at the VPN provider's site so that they can pick trough it and steal your information before passing it on. In addition, some VPN software slo reads all your files, non-stop, ringing computer performance.

Your connections to web sites are encrypted. Your Wi-Fi is encrypted. You don't need no stinking VPN. if you are in the Federal Witness Protection Program, use Tor Browser instead.
