FIXED. It required me to update the car's infotainment software to current version. A process of search and download for the right service bulletin, update file and instructions for specific make, model year and head unit. Before running the update, I deleted the iPhone from the car's BT device list. After the update completed, I paired the phone and waddayaknow, the "show notification" toggle reappeared on the iPhone page for the car as a BT device. Turning it on restored text messaging.

On your iPhone open Settings. Tap Bluetooth. Tap the little i in a circle next to your car. Make sure Show Notifications is green (on).
Maybe it would have been helpful if you listed everything you tried?
The next step I would recommend it is to open Bluetooth on your iPhone. Tap the circle with the i. Then scan down and tap forget this device. Do the same in your car and have your car forget your iPhone. Then pair the phone with your car again.
Once you're paired again, you'll need to go back into Bluetooth on your iPhone and turn on Show Notifications again.
After EVERY iOS update, I immediately Force Restart my iPhone. Try Force Restarting your iPhone since you say this stopped working after an update.
On iPhone 12:
You're welcome. Let us know if unpairing, then pairing again helps.
Me too same problem, and the fix does not exist anymore. After tapping the little i in the circle next to the car's Bluetooth name, the "Show Notification" toggle is no longer present on the car's Bluetooth settings page. It was missing under my previous iOS ver. 16.5 and did not reappear with upgrading to ver. 17.03. iPhone SE 2020
I’ve done that too. Also with the cars system. As I said all Bluetooth functions work except messaging and when I ask to send text verbally the car system reply’s that messaging function isn’t available. If I ask system to call it works fine. Only messaging doesn’t work.
This started a few weeks ago and I’ve had into the dealership (2) and they have updated the infotainment and it still doesn’t work with either of my iPhones. This is very frustrating when texting is not working while driving.
I have done that with negative results. All other functions work (i.e. phone) except messaging which worked until recent Apple software upgrade.
Sorry I haven't been clear enough. I appreciate your attempts to help. Happy Labor Day.
Thank you!! This worked! I’ve tried everything
