FIXED. It required me to update the car's infotainment software to current version. A process of search and download for the right service bulletin, update file and instructions for specific make, model year and head unit. Before running the update, I deleted the iPhone from the car's BT device list. After the update completed, I paired the phone and waddayaknow, the "show notification" toggle reappeared on the iPhone page for the car as a BT device. Turning it on restored text messaging.

Maybe it would have been helpful if you listed everything you tried?

The next step I would recommend it is to open Bluetooth on your iPhone. Tap the circle with the i. Then scan down and tap forget this device. Do the same in your car and have your car forget your iPhone. Then pair the phone with your car again.

Once you're paired again, you'll need to go back into Bluetooth on your iPhone and turn on Show Notifications again.

After EVERY iOS update, I immediately Force Restart my iPhone. Try Force Restarting your iPhone since you say this stopped working after an update.

On iPhone 12:

  • Press and quickly release the volume up button
  • Then immediately press and quickly release volume down button
  • Then immediately press and KEEP HOLDING the side power button. Keep holding it until the screen goes dark and keep holding until you see the Apple Logo, then let go
  • See if messaging now works in your car
