Invalid stride rate

Occasionally my Apple Watch stride rate measurement oscillates between 100 and 300-400 steps per minute. What could cause this?

Hello GaryP27,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand the importance of getting accurate measurements on your Apple Watch, and we'd like to help. To get started, we'd like to gather more information about this behavior:

  • Which Apple Watch model, and watchOS version are you using? Get information about Apple Watch
  • Which iOS version is installed on the paired iPhone? You can get this information on your iPhone under: Settings > General > About.

We have some steps that may help with this issue, please complete all the steps here:

Get the most accurate measurements using your Apple Watch

We hope this information is useful. Kind regards.

Thanks for replying. I have an Apple Watch SE (2nd gen) running version 9.3.1. The paired phone is an iPhone 13 running 16.3.1 at the moment, though this problem has been around for a while over multiple updates. The app used to display the graph above is Runkeeper, though I believe it gets its data from the watch.

The problem does not occur all the time, and I find the cyclical nature of the measurement odd, unless that's due to the method used for averaging readings. But regardless, a measurement of 300 steps/min is outrageous to begin with.

Hi GaryP27,

While the concern could be a setting or function of the app you're using, there are a couple of other elements to rule out first.

Begin by updating your iPhone to the latest software (presently iOS 16.6.1) as well as the Apple Watch (presently watchOS 9.6.2). Test again and see if the behavior continues.

If so, use the Health app as described in Use the Health app on your iPhone or iPod touch to track your step count or Run with your Apple Watch to track stride length to see if either figure seems incorrect. Note that step counting occurs even without the use of an Apple Watch so the iPhone hardware is used for that determination.

If those figures seem correct then contact the app developer using How to contact an app developer to inquire further or seek support on their software.

Regards.
