do I have to transfer ALL my icloud photos or can I select a selection to be transferred?
I simply want to send a selection of my pictures to googledrive, can I do this or do I have to send all 80K of them?

When following your related article Transfer a copy of your iCloud Photos collection to another service if you are able to use this feature, the only option available is to transfer all the data.
If you want to select some images to store elsewhere, you can manually download the photos you want by following Archive or make copies of the information you store in iCloud. From here you can manually upload the photos by following "Upload items to Google Photos from your browser" in Back up photos & videos.
