Video players black when attaching external monitor

I have the exact same problem as Black Video Display when connected to sec… - Apple Community

Short description: When I have my second monitor attached (AOC U2777B via an HP USB-C universal dock) video players go black. This occurs in chrome and safari (no other browsers tested). The problem occurs when the playing browser on the main MacBook Air screen and on the external monitor. When the screen is disconnected the problem does not occur.

To be clear: The screen does not go black, only the video player in the browser doesn't show an image. Sound plays, controls are visible, just the stream is missing.

I have no clue how to resolve this, but have seen some sporadic reports of this issue before. None of the sources I have found show a solution.

Final details:

MacBook Air M1 2020

MacOS Ventura 13.5.1 (also had the issue with older OS versions)

dock: HP Universal USB-C dock

Monitor: AOC U2777B

MacBook Air (M1, 2020)

The M1 MacBook Air only supports one external monitor, so I take it you attached the second one using some workaround like DisplayLink.

You may be getting bitten by DRM. This article is about DisplayLink, but I think the situation may be similar for other workaround technologies.
