is macOS Sierra HFS+ compatible

I have a MacBook Pro (Early 2015) running El Capitan 10.11.6

I would like to upgrade, but do not want to reformat the drive to APFS at this moment.

Note that if you upgraded one step further, to High Sierra, you might have a hard time avoiding APFS. High Sierra is compatible with HFS+ (it can read and write HFS+ volumes), but when you install High Sierra on a SSD, the installer may automatically convert that SSD from HFS+ format to APFS format.

These articles seem to confirm that High Sierra will try to do that conversion.
