use a web Browser, surf to your webmail portal and log in.
Sort your inbox by SIZE. I find that attachments are far larger than the written words, and getting rid of a handful of large items can get you quickly down to a reasonable sized inbox.

Check your inbox in the web mail account.
That inbox may be full; your email service may limit the number of emails you let accumulate.
Open a web Browser,
enter gmail in the search bar
a google web page opens, select webmail
enter your complete email address
when prompted, enter your mail password and log in.
Proceed to WebMail.
use the selection controls to select BIG emails, such as larger than 1 GB
if any are found, decide whether your Really need to keep them.
keep reducing the size until you have dealt with enough of the largest and your free space in adequate again.

• ONLY on your Mac, and NEVER access them from any other devices, ever?

• do you access your emails from BOTH your Mac and your iPhone, for example?
