Connecting exFAT formatted 4 TB Seagate HDD to 6th Gen iPad running 16.6 iOS

I went to an Apple store seeking to purchase the necessary accessory to connect a Seagate External HDD formatted as exFAT to my 6th Gen iPad running iOS 16.6 and believe me when I say this they said it cannot be done! They used a USB to lightning camera adapter, connected the hard disk to the usb port and plugged a power cable into the adapter. The ipad was getting charged but the hard disk was not powered. The disk partition is exFAT. I was very disappointed. Is there a solution that works with iPad 6th generation? Please help!

iPad, iPadOS 16

In theory that should have worked as outlined in the support document linked below.

If the drive did not power on when connected to the Camera Adapter and power, then either the camera adapter was faulty or the drive has a problem.

If you can verify the drive works on a different device, and can be accessed then the camera adapter may have not worked correctly.

Outside of that, are you sure it was not getting power? Does it have a light on it that would show it being turned on? Does it have a power switch? Does it have its own external power supply?

If it has its own external power supply, it must be connected to it.
