Using linguistic symbols

As a tutor, I need to distinguish between short and long vowels and I haven't found a way to do that on my MacBook. I don't want diacritical marks, just a small upward curved line like a wide u for short vowels and a line for long ones.

The standard way to do this is via diacritical marks, which is extremely easy. Why exactly don't you want them?

If you activate the input source called ABC Extended, you can add the line via Option A then the vowel, and the u via Option B then the vowel. āēīōū ăĕĭŏŭ

You need to choose English instead. In that category you will find ABC Extended. Use the + to add it, then go to the input menu at the top right of the screen and click on the icon there and choose this one

Then you can easily make your breves via option B and then the vowel.

But you never mentioned Hebrew before. Do you want to make those two diacritics over Hebrew script letters like א? If so, let us know, as that requires something totally different.

Or are you using a Hebrew hardware keyboard to write English or some other Latin script, or making Latin letters by pressing Caps Lock on a Hebrew keyboard layout?

I need something simple. I tried going through Keyboard>Text imput and chose French, since that Language uses the brève. However, that's complicated. When I want to write in Hebrew, I have the Hebrew Keyboard, but I only want to use the brève over voles, I don't want to have to switch keyboards. Why can't it be added to the diacritics? It is after all, a diacritic.
