Blue screen upon awakening

iMac 2017 27" model, using Ventura 13.5.1. When waking up from sleep mode, sometimes a blue screen will appear for a small fraction of a second before desktop appears. Lately, it's been on for nearly a full second. This is an occasional issue; most awakenings go directly to the desktop.

iMac, macOS 10.12

It will help us get a good idea of what is causing your problem if you provide a report of your system, that way we do not have to play 20 questions with you. The report we are requesting does NOT provide any personal information and is extremely safe to use. Please navigate to www.Etrecheck.com and download the free version of EtreCheck. Once you have you downloaded the app and installed it, please run the report and save it. This report will help us get a good idea what has been installed on your system and help us be able to diagnose what may be wrong.

When you have your report, you can attach it when you reply to this message and we can then review it and help you determine what is needed to get your system running well again.

For instructions on how to download your EtreCheck report and attach it to your reply to this message please click How to use the Add Text Feature When Post… - Apple Community It is helpful to us if you download the report to your Desktop.

Your computer has been bogged down by adding third party antivirus apps which at best are 100% worthless as they do absolutely nothing that Mac OS doesn't already do. What they do though is make Mac OS slow, appear unstable, appear buggy and takes money out of your wallet in return for these "features." Please locate the uninstall instructions for AVG & Webroot and then please follow them to the letter. Going forward please never install any third party:

  • Antivirus apps
  • Cleaning apps
  • Security apps
  • VPN apps
  • Maintenance apps

Having Malwarebytes installed is okay, it was written by a trusted developer and does not interfere with Mac OS.

Simply keep Mac OS up-to-date and restart your computer about 1x per week and then please Mac OS alone. After you have uninstalled AVG & Webroot, please run a fresh EtreCheck report and carefully review it to ensure both are no longer present. If they still show up then you will need to manually uninstall each and we can offer instructions for how to do that.

Also, after uninstalling AVG & Webroot please check your computer and I have a pretty good idea that your computer will begin running well again.

Okay and I am not terribly surprised as AVG spreads itself all over your system. The first thing to do is to download FindAnyFile and have it search your system with anything that has the "AVG" in it and have that deleted. Then restart the computer in Safe Mode per Apple's instructions (it can take up to 10 minutes for your Mac to start in Safe Mode so please be patient) and after it has restarted in Safe Mode then restart normally.

Then it is time to run another EtreCheck report and see if AVG is gone now.

You did not provide an update on Webroot, did that fully uninstall?

I found AVG and Webroot in Downloads and deleted them, emptied the trash, then ran EtreCheck again, and the report still showed their presence. I followed instructions on how to restart Mac in safe mode, twice, and the system overview said it was still in normal mode.

I'd hoped not to have to download FindAnyFile, but it appears I'll have to. Or, with the Mac's failure to open in Safe mode, would it even make a difference?

I did this twice, but the computer still opened in normal mode.

I shut down the computer while we were away for a few days. When I rebooted, I held my finger on the right hand shift key (instead of the left, as I'd done before), and it opened in safe mode. I restarted, ran EtreCheck, and saw that AVG had been deleted, but Webroot was still active. Spotlight can't find Webroot on my apps or downloads. Will probably have to download Find Any File to get rid of it.

You can check to see if you've removed all of the supporting files by downloading and running the shareware app Find Any File to search for any files with the application's or the developer's name in the file name.  For the software mentioned previously you'd do the following search(es):

1 - Name contains avg

2 - Name contains webfoot

Any files that are found can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop or Trash bin in the Dock for deletion.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

If you get warnings that the file can't be deleted because it is in use or used by another app boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and delete from there.

Note:  if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode.  This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will assure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

You also should reboot more frequently (current uptime is 6 days per the report). Doing so clears out temporary system and application cache and swap files. This will help with the system health ad performance.

Also Flip4Mac hasn't been needed for several system versions. I'd uninstall it according to the developer's instructions and check with Find Any File.
