I have the current Big Sur program which again lists the Sony alpha 9 as supported but every program I try to open an image the message NUerrorerror 8 comes up

Are you shooting compressed or uncompressed RAW? What ever type you're shooting may not be supported. Try the other RAW format and see if it works. As I recall there are other cameras that shoot two types of RAW and only one is supported.
