Mac Mini M2 LG Monitor using hdmi cable - no ports work

The monitor works with hdmi cable but no sound no power to usb ports on back to charge devices trackpad Keyboard. Under settings the monitor isn’t even listed - it’s like it works but nothing registers. But using the USBC cable everything works fine -

the apple support people told me the monitor should be using hdmi cable and eventually it may break down if I keep using the usb c cable .. I just don’t get what’s wrong with it -

that is a ridiculous thing to claim.

it could easy be that it's by design from lgs side, you don't mention if when you only use udb-c or both cable connected, if only the usb-c then it's a thunderbolt connection with a usb-c connector, which is a pretty normal way to connect monitors to mac computers, if both cables then it's an usb3 or usb4 connection using usb-c connectors (usb-c is just the physical port, it can transmit a range of protocols depending on the implementation)

then the monitor likely works as an usb hub and only let people use it's ports when the usb-c cable is connected

if it was me then I would read up on LG's site and or maybe test the monitor with another computer maybe a windows computer or another mac to verify the behavior.
