Dark spot appears on screen

A dark spot started to appear on my 12.9 inch 5th generation iPad Pro. See the attached photo. Strangely, it disappears from time to time for a while (under an hour) but it always comes back.

I took it in to the Apple Store and, of course, it had disappeared. They told me that it must be a software problem because it was not permanent.

i reset the iPad to clear everything out but the spot was present when I restarted the iPad.

Two photos are attached. One with the spot and one without. The latter was taken after the former.

Interestingly, the spot does not show up in a screenshot. The attached photos were taken with my iPhone.

any suggestions would be appreciated.

It turned out to be a hardware problem with the iPad. Once I showed them that the problem could be reproduced by putting pressure on the back of the iPad in the area of the dark spot, they replaced the iPad. Fortunately it was still under warranty.

We'd love to assist you with your iPad Pro. To clarify, when you reset your iPad was this process completed within the Settings app or did you use a computer? We ask because a factory restore erases the information and settings on your iPad, installs the latest version of iPadOS. This would be the best step to take when the issue is related to the software. It extracts the software that is installed on your iPad and installs a fresh copy. You can find more details here:

Also, after resetting your iPad, was it set up as new to was it restored from a backup? If it was restored from a backup, the issue could be stored within the backup itself.

Thank you for your reply. I did a factory reset using the Setting app on the iPad. The spot appeared immediately on the welcoming Hello screen before choosing the language. No software was loaded other than the IOS.

I did some more investigation into the problem. I can cause the mark to appear and disappear by pressing on the back of the iPad immediately behind the spot. Although I am happy that I can make the spot disappear, it still eventually reappears. So this is not a solution to the problem.

I plan on taking the iPad back to the Apple store and demonstrating what I have found.

Hi BG1233,

I have the exact same problem, and find that if I press on the dark spot it vanishes temporarily. Could you let me know how you resolved the issue with Apple.
