receiving calls in Europe initiated from Canada, caller id shows incorrect 3rd country

I live in Europe. Whenever I receive a call from Canada, the caller id shows a 3rd country - most typically Romania, Greece, Bulgaria or Hungary but sometimes Austria or Portugal. This is a consistent problem, not intermittent. Incoming calls are from my bank in Canada, from my mother, from various friends and businesses I am engaged with - all the same thing. This has been going on consistently for 4 years. I've owned 3 different iPhones over the years, all exhibit the same problem. My wife has had 2 iPhones over the period, same issue.

Sometimes you can see the "real" number indicated in the spoofed number (eg., incoming call from Toronto 416 area code - the digits 416 sometimes appear in the front end of the caller id string, but not always).

What is going on?

While I can’t speak for European carriers, in the U.S. the caller ID “name” is appended to the call string by the “completing” carrier via an “out of band lookup”

It might appear that the originating CallerID is getting “scrubbed off” somewhere along the route and the delivering carrier is adding whatever call info they might have.

Telco engineering is notoriously secretive and difficult to reach, but you need to start w/ your “call completing” carrier.
