Not receiving some messages from non IPhones

Seems iMessages from Apple to Apple devices go back and forth by wi-fi.

Yet:

SMS and MMS text messages to and from non-Apple devices use cellular data (provider charges may apply)

NB: Also: If wi-fi is not available messages go by cellular data, if it is turned on.

If your provider's plan permits:

You can check you are allowing the use of cellular data for SMS and MMS Messages if you want to:

(When cellular data is off, apps will use only Wi-Fi for data.)

An option: Wi-Fi Assist is generally on by default.

If you wish: you check Wi-Fi Assist automatically switches to cellular when you have a poor Wi-Fi connection.
