Syncing issue

I'm having bad luck syncing a separate audio file to my video.

Sources:

  • Gopro footage from a Hero 11 at 48khz and 23.98fps
  • Zoom M4 audio recorder at 32 bit, 96khz.

I've actually used this combination a couple of times now with no issues at all but this time there's a huge drift. Even when I sync at the beginning and then speed one of the two up to sync at the end as well it will be out of sync in the middle.

I know it's not ideal to work with different sample rates of sound but had no issues with it till now.

I've tried working on both a 48khz timeline and 96khz timeline (both 23.98fps)

Any suggestions how I can make them sync?

Did you try the sync clip function? What happened?

The Go Pro audio is funky so that might be a problem. You might have to cut up the audio and do speed changes in sections to try to match it up.

If you’re going to edit this long clip into a lot of pieces it might be worth opening the GoPro clip into the timeline and adding the Zoom audio into it to do the syncing in there.

You might also try Resolve and see if the syncs there. Then export the file to being back to FCP.

Thanks again for your reply Tom.

Tried both Premiere and Resolve. But that’s not going to fix it. It seems there’s a recording error on the Zoom, some parts are simply missing even tough it didn’t split the file. So it was never going to sync completely. I have now found the places where it skips and simply synced the seperate parts.

So not a FCP issue but a Zoom file issue. Thanks for your help!
