Notes no longer opening with Face ID

after last update notes will not open with Face ID, it asks for password which I can’t remember (or it’s locked in notes!) and there’s no option for “forgot password”. Unable to open notes now. Frustrating!!! Fix this issue apple!!

Face ID is enabled. I even shut off and turned back on, even within the Notes password in settings. It is an issue within the Apple update that Apple needs to fix!

Troubleshooting Face ID After an Update:

Report this to Apple:

Do your part: Let Apple know what is going on here. Provide them with feedback on this. They may not get back to you directly, but the more feedback they received on this, the more they will know what is going on, and what needs to be fixed in updates to come. Apple will know nothing of this issue, if you don’t report it to them.

  1. Go Here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple
  2. Select: "Bug Report" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Comment: that this all started after installing an update, and how you have troubleshot this, thus far. Include the URL of this thread.
  4. Proceed from there aw necessary

Notes occasionally requires re-entry of the underlying password. (In much the same way that we have to re-enter our device passcodes)

This is normal behavior.

“… Don’t rely on Face ID or Touch ID as the only means of unlocking your notes. If you update your Face ID or Touch ID settings, or want to change your Notes password, you have to reenter your Notes password … “

Good to hear that you got it sorted. 🤣

Re: Your additional comment.

It is now possible to lock your notes w/ your passcode. This does allow one to regain access thru any of Apple’s normal account recovery mechanisms.

For users who desire MORE security for particular notes — with encryption that even Apple can’t help with — the “Custom” password is an option.

However, as the encrypting key is known ONLY to to user, the burden of recovery is also completely on the user.

(It would be somewhat illogical if the same Apple security mechanisms which the user had deemed to be “insufficient” …

… were than able to “bypass” the “custom” user-applied encryption scheme)

Great job!

After Remembering a Password:

Then make a note of it on a hardcopy sheet of paper, and store it somewhere where you'll have a record of it. Do No share the password with anyone.
