HomePod not fully muting

When I tell my HomePod mini to mute ("hey siri, mute") it will sometimes mute 100%, but sometimes it will just reduce the volume to a whisper. Why would this happen?

I recently bought this unit and don't know if it's defective. It ran a software update when I activated it, so should be up to date.

Hi lumfounded,

One element to note is that "mute" is not listed as a recommended command in the support article Play audio using Siri on HomePod nor is it listed as a touch control option at Use HomePod touch controls. That's not to say it won't or can't work, just that there is not documentation saying it should function as you expect.

A command that is listed in the first article is:

  • "Adjust the volume: Say something like “Hey Siri, make it louder.” Or set a specific volume level with “Hey Siri, set the volume to 50 percent.”"

If you use that command to set the volume to 0 percent, does it consistently perform as expected? If so that may be the prescribed way to accomplish the function you're attempting. You could also use Create scenes and automations with the Home app to program a specific action triggered by the word "mute" and test to see if that consistently functions.

Regards.

Wow, what a shocking revelation! I wish the function were officially supported, both because it's faster to say "mute" than "set the volume to x," and because unmuting restores the volume to the pre-muting level without the user having to remember what volume to restore to. Thanks for letting me know this isn't an official feature—I will file a feature request for sure.
