iPad Pro frozen black screen

Hi all,

I got a replacement iPad Pro that suddenly ‘crashed’ when I was using Safari after an iOS update & it has been stuck on an unresponsive, black screen ever since. Apple denied this is a more widespread issue (on little research online I see it is) & won’t help because I was 10 days passed the 3 month warranty for a replacement device! I have tried all the trouble shooting & nothing has worked thus far including hooking it up to my MacBook & using Finder.

However I have noticed when I leave it alone for a week or so & try it again it does turn on to the Home Screen momentarily, but quickly shuts again to the frozen black screen. I have quickly tried to start the latest software update when it does come on but it cuts off before it is completed.

Ironically the iPad it did replace had never experienced this issue or any of my many previous devices. I am an Apple customer for decades & finding this very frustrating.

any suggestions would be welcome

thank you for your reply I had found that link & tried where possible to attempt some of the solutions to no avail.

I am an Apple customer for decades & finding this very frustrating, any further suggestions would be welcome as I paid over €800 for that replacement device which was only 3 months & 10 days in my possession when this kicked off! It is just ridiculous & more common than Apple are divulging. The Irish Times featured this very thing only two weeks after I had the issue after a reader wrote to them out of frustration because their replacement Apple Watch did exactly the same thing & developed the frozen black screen, they were also given the run around by Apple because “they were outside the three month warranty for a replacement device”. Not a good look for Apple!

Ironically the iPad (or any of my many previous devices) it did replace had never experienced this issue. I had to replace the original iPad Pro because of a cracked screen (it was still working).

I’ve had better results with Apple products, but I fear yours appears to be a hardware issue - unfortunately. Using a wall adapter is the most common solution. (If you haven’t done that, do try.)

The “black screen” is not common, and is symptomatic of a range of hardware and software woes. As a result, it’s not necessarily a “known issue,” since there’s a variety of potential causes. Some can be remedied easily, but probably not this one.
