Using iPhone for navigation in car, navigation works, but no audio, for both google maps and Waze. It has worked, but is not consistent

You might need to alter the settings for spoken directions while navigating.
Try changing the settings here to see if you get the directions more in line with what you would like:

That should help you get Maps configured to speaking the way you like. If the issue doesn't occur in Maps but only in Google Maps and Waze, contact Google for help with their products:
