Quick Start -> Create Account For Children -> Enter Card Details -> "There was an error. Please try later"

I'm using iPhone 11 (iOS 16.6.1) and Quick Start to onboard iPhone XR for my child

When In Parental Consent step and trying to verify by Credit/Debit card, I always get the message "There was an error/ Please try later". I have been trying for 2 different debit cards, always the same result.

Please help, I'm extremely frustrated. BTW, this error message is a disaster from the UX perspective. Tells nothing. Should be more specific whether is it connectivity issue, wrong card data, service unavailable error, etc.

Based on your country of residence and country you have selected under your Apple ID --> Payment methods that you can use with your Apple ID - Apple ...

Have you a Debit/Credit card that is issued to you that is valid internationally and is from the same Country / Region as your Apple ID.

Know it here --> If your payment method is declined in the App Store or iTunes ...

Check the following

  1. The payment method that you are adding is of the same country as that of App Store Country on your iPhone
  2. You have a valid payment plan debit/credit card from an authorised bank from the same country
  3. Payment methods that you can use with your Apple ID - Apple Support
  4. Learn more about family purchases and payments.
  5. Please check if your Debit/Credit card is valid internationally

Confirm the bug, the UX here is ****.

  • I had the same experience when I was prompted to prove my age during the registration process for my kid's iPad.
  • Tried 3 Visa/Master cards (all valid). I tried variations with my address, spaces in the card numbers, etc. – no joy.
  • Then I tried to add a kid to the family on my MacBook, which showed a similar form (with just minor differences) and had the exact same error message.

Workaround

What worked is

  1. Sign in as a parent to appleid.apple.com
  2. Add a card to the payment methods (I had none before that)
  3. Go to adding a kid to the family (I tried on my MacBook, but it'll likely also work on iPad/iPhone)
  4. When you get prompted to prove your age, you'll be required to enter the CVC code of the card, not all the details. And it worked.

Hope this helps others.

And hey, Apple. If you don't have time to test your own native forms, then bring on the browser with the card screen from appleid.apple.com. At least in this case you'll have less area for testing.
