Use iPad as second monitor without sidecar

I have a MacBook Pro for my work laptop and will be travelling a lot next year so I’d like to buy an iPad to use as a second screen (and for personal use). Given I cannot log into an Apple ID on my work laptop, sidecar does not work. Is there an option to do an HDMI connection with an iPad to act solely as an external monitor? Since this is a work laptop, I can’t download apps like Duo either.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.14

iOS/iPadOS devices fundamentally have no provision to accept direct video input from another device.

While Apple's Sidecar feature is designed to use an iPad as an external monitor for a Mac computer, there are prerequisites - such as both devices being signed-in to iCloud with the same AppleID.

A potential alternative, that removes the need for the same AppleID, is to use a third party solution - such as Duet Display:

However, for a managed Business/Enterprise computer, you will likely require administrative-rights to install the necessary Application on the computer. Your employer may also have a restrictive policy concerning use of privately owned computing devices for business purposes.

Perhaps the easiest solution is to consider purchase of a portable monitor. These are readily available as 15" (and some 17") models, with display resolution up to 4K. When compared with the cost of many iPad models, a portable monitor is a relatively cheap solution for road warriors with need for a second screen.

If you have an appropriate model iPad, the portable monitor can also be used to provide a full extended desktop with iPad's Stage Manager feature:

  • iPad Air (5th generation)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (all generations)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later)

The most direct and supported path is Sidecar as you have noted. Ask your IT organization for assistance.
