My late 2013 Mac Pro won't POST!

I've tried to reset the SMC/NVRAM, but nothing, still black screen. I have power, and the fans run, but no chime (on boot) and "no signal" message on my monitor. I tired reseating the flash drive, and the memory sticks, still nothing, I haven't tore it apart to check the thermal paste on the CPU, or the GPU; I'm at a loss as to why all of a sudden it decides to quit posting, any ideas/help where to start, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Don R Baughman

On other Mac Pro models, when your Mac 'appears dead' at power-on, the suggestion is to change out the PRAM backup battery. Measured in hand, Voltage under 3.0 volts is spent. BR2032 is factory original, but users have found the readily available CR2032, used in car-key fobs and garage door openers and many other devices is a good substitute.

Unfortunately, in the late 2013 Mac Pro, the PRAM backup battery is deep inside. Accessing the PRAM backup battery is a 32-step tear-down process that involves disconnecting every major circuit board. This illustrated procedure can be found online and studied. If you can do a memory upgrade without drawing blood, you can likely do this complicated, but NOT difficult procedure.

The tear-down and re-assembly has a built-in side effect: the wiping contacts on every module are refreshed in the process. This sometimes clears corrosion problems that were starting to cause subtle problems.

What I want to achieve TheLittles; is to have my Mac Pro to start up and run. Perhaps my wording on "POST" (Power on Self Test) is an acronym that's perhaps used for PCs instead of Macs.

I'm trying to get my Mac to start up and run, not just sit there with a blank screen, forgive me, if my question was vague. As I stated, I have power as far as power button light is on, and the fans are running, but no chime, or screen image. I have an external keyboard (Mac A1243), and I've tried three different monitors, same result; nothing.

Thank you for the followup reply.

Troubleshooting a Black Screen:

Mirror the Screen to an External Display:

Performing the following will mirror the Home Screen, and allow you to use it as if it were your Mac's screen.

  • Without Touchbar: Hold Down [command + F1]
  • With Touchbar: Hold Down: [command + dull screen]

Where to Find "Dull Screen":

It is the button on the Touch Bar located atop the middle of the 1 and the 2. It is all the way to the left on the Touch Bar. If you do not see it, click the "<" symbol on the far right to reveal it.

Try a Second Monitor:

Have another monitor? If so, try it with that. If not, ask someone else if you may use their monitor. Report back the results of using this on your keyboard.

POST::= Power On Self Test

The initial "chime" sound is generated in startup ROM software when your Mac passes the Power-On Self Test. If the chime occurs and/or startup continues, your Mac is working.

The blank gray screen should light up. Then on to the disk Drive.

If no chime and/or no progress, carefully observe the power indicator light. if it is blinking a pattern, that is a small integer code, and can be researched further.

Set Up a Genius Bar Appointment:

Have no worries. It is a misconfiguration on, and you need to take it to them, getting this fixed. Set up a Genius Bar Appointment at your local Apple Store. There, it will be looked at and you'll be provided with your options to fix this.

What to Bring:

Important: Bring some notes, your original proof of purchase, and create a backup prior to bringing it in. Though not required, bring the power adapter along, in case theirs does not work.  See More here: Get your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch Ready for Service - Apple Support
