Home Pod: I'm sorry there's a problem with Apple Music

Asking Home Pod to play any track/artist/album by name - it responds 'ok, playing Xxxxxxxx' or similar, then says 'Sorry, there's a problem with Apple Music'.

I had a trial Apple Music account but it lapsed ages ago. I just want to play from my music library now. The music I request is in my music library.

I have rebooted the device. I have reset the device completely. I have logged out and back in to Apple ID on the Home Pod. I have changed who the primary user is and changed it back again. After every attempt, the error remains.
