New SanDisk SSD only shows up when connected over a dongle
When I connect SSD directly to my Macbook Air M2 nothing shows up, it only shows up when it's connected via dongle. The same cable is being used.
MacBook Air, macOS 13.3

If it's recognized when you connect it via a hub/dock, but not when you plug it in directly, could this be a security thing? When running on Apple-Silicon-based Mac laptops, Ventura has a security "feature" that requires you to authorize directly-connected USB and Thunderbolt devices.
If you see a dialog asking "Allow accessory to connect?" and you click "Don't allow", that could be the issue.
Allow accessories to connect to Mac - Apple Support
Since you say that you sometimes see the drive, I assume that the problem isn't simply that the preferences in Finder Settings are set up to omit external drives from the Desktop and/or Finder window sidebars.
