finder preventing mbp from shutting down

Too frequently I get a pop-up saying 'The Finder can't quit because an operation is still in progrss on an IOS device. Try again after the operation is complete.

Why is there no indicator as to what this operation is & how long it will take to finish ?

I have left my MBP on all day & still this so-called 'operation' goes on !

Hi John,

When I shut the MBP down early this morning the pop-up came on again. I then turned off the iphone, waited ten minutes & tried to shut down the MBP again but still, the pop-up persisted. The only way I can shut down my 13" MBP is by holding the power button. I can not understand why there is no indicator as to what this operation is that prevents the shut down. Could it be virus related ?

In the Finder, does the iOS device show up as a connected or mounted item on the left pane of the Finder sidebar? If so, try ejecting it.

Otherwise, You can try Force Quitting the Finder. You can do this by pressing Command + Option + Esc keys which will bring up a pop-up box with a list of running applications. Select the Finder to force quit. I would make sure you first unmount/eject all external drive first to minimize the risk of data loss with them.

Unfortunately it is not unusual for macOS to get stuck where some process just won't let go or macOS does not recognize that a process has finished. It can be very frustrating. I usually find it occurs when I'm trying to eject a drive/volume when I want to disconnect an external drive.
