I have been paying for apple tv. It does not recognize this and wants me to sign up for a free trial. I have not used apple tv for a while on my tv and it does not recognize this.

What is your model TV? Does it have the Apple TV app among its smart apps?
Did you manage to sign in to the Apple TV app, through the in-app Settings (sprockets wheel icon), with the Apple ID account that has the Apple TV+ subscription linked to it?
Else try app troubleshooting for your model TV, but that may differ by brand and model, which is unknown at this time.
