"Wilhelm Scream" in FCP or Logic Pro?

This morning a discussion about the "Wilhelm Scream" occurred and I immediately said that I had got it on my computer.

I had seen (heard?) it within the last couple of years as part of Apple Loops.

Of course, when I tried to give a demonstration it was nowhere to be found.

I can get the effect from the internet but I am convinced it should be somewhere in Apple Loops . . . can anyone verify whether it is still there and if so, give me the location?

"Wilhelm Scream" is a generic foley term for... well... the scream. The term may be either trademarked or copyrighted... and it isn't used on any of the screams in Apple Loops... more on this... The sound effect itself is not in the public domain.

There are, however, many screams in Apple Loops.

In /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/ — (I've reorganized my loops so the order isn't the same as the original installations), but what you are looking for is a folder labelled "Jeremy Holland". Inside Jeremy Holland there is Sound Effects and you want the "People" folder.

This folder is FULL of "Wilhelm Screams" - almost 90 of them. They are, amusingly, called ****helm Scream. For example Aaronhelm Scream, Bradhelm Scream, Coreyhelm Scream (I swear I can tell this is Corey Feldman's voice!), etc...

There are others, not quite Wilhelm Scream effects, but interesting. In the Chris Moulios folder there is "Lower and screamy" which sounds a bit like Hypnotoad (Futurama), and Detroit Chop Shop has a few interesting "scream" effects that are completely synthetic... or synthesized (in their Motions & Transitions folder).

It's a fairly comprehensive collection of "Wilhelm Screams"...but not one of them is called... Wilhelm. :D

It's been so many years since I bought the complete set. There were what? about 6 or 7 Jam Packs for awhile.

I also think that Soundtrack Pro had its own subset of Apple Loops and that's where the ____helm scream tracks might be in...

I'm not sure that Logic Pro inherited *all* the same files as the older Soundtrack Pro (although — if you have the Final Cut Studio 7 installation disks, you may have all these files you're looking for!)

Finder doesn't search protected folders but if you get into the /Library/Audio folder, you should be able to use the Search from the folder window to dig down into all your Apple Loops.

The files I referenced earlier are in a sub-folder descendant from "Apple Loops for Soundtrack Pro".

It looks like I manually placed that folder inside the Final Cut Pro Sound Effects folder so that they could be found from the app.

From Apple Loops for Soundtrack Pro down it looks like /Apple Loops/Jeremy Holland/Sound Effects/People/ then all the scream files.

... in case you want to keep looking — they're probably worth it ;)

Very cool :) I actually had a look and I still have the ones from 2007 on an older computer.

Soundtrack Pro:

Looks like the ones from recent FCP (circa 2011) are not lossless though.

Final Cut:

If you run mdls on them in the Terminal you'll see some interesting differences between them. I wonder what the deal is because it's the same, as in, identical sound but just in different formats.
