I have tried selecting Safari as my browser. I have tried to delete DDG in preferences and extensions, I have restarted and shut down multiple times . DDG stays as my default browser, acting more like a virus than an app.

You have to reset the default browser search engine and what the Home icon opens. Just look for DDG everywhere in settings and replace each instance with what you want.
DDG is not a virus.
If you did install a DDG app, drag it to the trash from the Applications folder and then empty the trash.
Duck Duck Go is the reverse of malware/viruses.
Unlike Google, it promises NOT to track you.
I have it selected as my default search engine in Safari, and the user-perceivable difference (except that my every move is no longer being recorded and sold) is not detectably different from google search engine.
