To stop the backup. Turn Airplane Mode on for a few minutes. Disable Wi-Fi and Turn off mobile data.

If you are taking a backup on iCloud for the first time it does take a long time.

Please check the following

  1. iCloud has enough storage space.
  2. You are connected to the internet over WiFi
  3. Your device is connected to a power source and charging.

If you are taking backup for the first time and using the "Backup Now" option then Set the screen Auto-Lock to None. Keep the iPhone on the same backup screen and do not use the iPhone till the backup completes.

Or

Keep the iPhone plugged into a power source and remain connected to the internet over WiFi. Leave the iPhone overnight with Screen Locked.
