Yes I was in a hurry to get to a zoom meeting after the system update. I don't know what I clicked on but now my desktop is populated with zillions of files - I guess from my Icloud? Any idea what I did or how to proceed?

Not really. Try Edit > Select All and then choose File > New Folder with Selection (xx Items)
That will at least move all the files into one folder where you can examine them without cluttering up the Desktop.

system update 12.6.9 dumped a bunch of files on desktop
