If I can do a split screen, how do I do it.

Key to accessing and controlling multi-tasking is the small “three-dot” button that is found at the top-centre edge of each App Window. Tap the multitasking button at the top of the slide-over window to expose a menu - from which you can change the window view.
You should note that if your iPad* supports Stage Manager, if this feature has been enabled, you'll not see Split and Slide-over views, but will instead see Apps displayed within resizable App windows:
Settings > Home Screen & Multitasking > Stage Manager > Use Stage Manger on this iPad - set to OFF or ON as required
