M1 iMac not recognizing external CD Drive

My M1 iMac suddenly stopped recognizing a CD drive I had plugged directly into the computer. Also won't recognize my WD Ultra Passport drive (which I use for a Time Machine backup). It ill recognize a seagate portable backup drive, and SD thumbdrives and my iPhone. Not sure what happened . When I have the WD drive plugged in, it will also cause my keyboard to stop responding and the computer to slow. I ran apple diagnostics - all is well. Rebooted, unplugged the computer from the back and waited a few minutes and replugged. Still no go. Could both drives have gone bad close to each other? (i tried plugging in the portable CD drive to my wife's Intel iMac - didn't recognize it there either)
