says:

*Firmware updates are delivered periodically while your AirPods are charging and in Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Seems your AirPods firmware updates automatically via a Mac or Apple device that is updated to the latest OS software; NB: AirPods update quite quickly using a Mac.

Tip: You may need to leave AirPods connected to power overnight with an iPhone (using iOS 16 or later) connected to wi-fi close by..
