Apple Mail - Flagged message count is wrong

I did a search for this issue and found lot of old posts using different OS, so I figured I would try again specific to my configuration.

My AppleMail Flagged folder counter is off. It is always 6 higher than it really is. Not a big deal, but I use the flag counter every day to know things I need to do before days end. I flag new messages as ones I need to address or complete the project described there. It needs to be zero by end of day and it's just frustrating I cant rely on the counter anymore.

Things I have already tried and didnt work.

1) Restart computer: an oldy but a goody. didnt work, but worth the try.

2) Take Mailbox offline, then back online.

3) Rebuild mailbox: whats odd, is this function does not seem to work now. When I chose it, typically it would take quite a while to remove then reload all the messages. It does nothing now. Its like I didnt even chose this dropdown.

4) Reboot in Safe Mode and rebuild: Same result as #3 above

5) I saw something online about going to the Library and Mail and removing some folders and restarting. Im sorry, but I didnt retain those exact steps. That was a mistake. The idea was that Apple Mail would rebuild itself I think, but after it tried to for 15 minutes it would always end with an error and that I should make sure I had enough space on my Home folder (I have plenty). That led to a chat with Apple Support as I was on deadline and needed mail to be working - They suggested another restart in Safe Mode - which did get my Mail working again - but the counter is still not working.

This is not a big problem - just annoying. I miss being able to count on the counter (pun intended).

Any help would be appreciated.

Have a great day!

Hi meh_67,

Thank you. If the issue is not happening in the new user account, you can share data to the new user account to set that up and use in place of the account with the issue.

Take a look here: Share files with others who use your Mac - Apple Support

Additionally, you can check and see if log in items may be causing the behavior. To isolate the issues, test the behavior after removing log in items from your original macOS user account:

Remove login items to resolve startup problems on your Mac - Apple Support

1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click General  in the sidebar, then click Login Items on the right. (You may need to scroll down.)
2. Make a list of the login items in the Open at Login list—you’ll need to remember them later.
3. Select all of the login items, then click the Remove button .
4. Choose Apple menu  > Restart.
5. If this solves the problem, open Login Items settings again, add the login items one at a time, and restart your Mac after adding each one.
6. When the problem occurs again, follow the steps above to remove only the last login item you added.

Let us know if that helps.

Kind regards.

Hello meh_67,

Let's use the process below to create a new user account to see if that behavior still persists from there:

1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Users & Groups  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
2. Click the Add Account button below the list of users on the right (you may be asked to enter your password.)
3. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose a type of user.
Standard: Standard users are set up by an administrator. Standard users can install apps and change their own settings, but can’t add other users or change other users’ settings.
For more information about the options for each type of user, click the Help button in the lower-left corner of the dialog.
4. Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.
5. Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Enter a password hint to help the user remember their password.
6. Click Create User.

You can also find those steps in this resource: Add a user or group on Mac - Apple Support

Testing in a new user account will help us further isolate this to a user-specific or system-wide conflict.

Let us know your result, and we'll keep moving forward from there.

I created a new Test login account and created my email accounts. After all my messages came in, the Flag counter on the Test account is fine. Not sure if it's related, but I am having issues with some News websites home page reloading over and over. That was not happening on the Test account either. So both issues were fixed in the Test account.

OK, completely recreating a user account like my original Admin one seemed like a lot of work. I did try removing login items and that didnt work - so I realized that when I created the new Test User account you suggested I had to put in all the info for my email and it basically recreated itself for that user - Sooo... I just did the same thing for my main Admin user account. I got rid of my email accounts, then recreated them - and viola! Guess I should have thought of that before.

All is well now - thank you so much for your help!
