ejected scan disk external disk, remove, closed lid. Now got a notice Disk Not Ejected Properly. What do I do to fix this?

I ejected a scan disk external drive from a USB port after clicking on the eject named device. Pulled it out. Then close the lid. The next day, I got a message " Disk not ejected properly ". What do I do to fix this?

I am using a 2012 Mac Book Pro with the Catlinia operating system.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

Make sure to wait at least 30 seconds or more after clicking the "eject" button before you physically disconnect the drive from the computer. Sometimes it can take a bit of time for macOS to let go of everything on the ejecting drive. 30 seconds should probably be sufficient, but if it is not, then try waiting a minute after ejecting the volume before disconnecting the drive.

Is there only one mounted volume on the drive?

It is unfortunate that macOS removed the old notification of informing the user when it was safe to disconnect a drive.
