Sound constantly disappears in MacBook Pro [Ventura]

After the latest update to Ventura 13.5.2, I have started experiencing issues with sound. Initially, the audio works for a few seconds after a reboot. However, after playing the very first music or video, the sound disappears. For example, when I play a video in VLC, it has sound, but if I switch to another video or audio, the sound disappears. Even playing a YouTube video in the browser doesn't have sound.

To temporarily resolve this issue, I have to force quit the "coreaudiod" process, but this solution only works for a few minutes, and then the sound disappears again.

I have tried several solutions, including NVRAM reset and SMC reset, but all of them provide only temporary relief, as the audio works for a while before encountering the same issue.

Troubleshoot the Mac Audio:

What to Try:

  • Unmute the App:

If an app has its own audio input and output settings, then perform things on the app itself.

  • Remove External Devices:

Verify what your output item is.

  • Disable Bluetooth:

If there are any microphones nearby, then they may be getting in the way via bluetooth.

See if an app is permitted to use your microphone.

  • Boot into Safe Mode:

When you boot into Safe Mode, items load by default, with certain settings and caches set aside. So, hold down the shift key upon boot. See what happens then.

  • Create a New Administrator:

See if creating and logging in as a new administrator does the trick. There may be something misconfigured in your current user - something that is getting in the way. Go to: System Preferences > Users & Groups > Unlock > Click: "+" > Create the new administrator

If nothing I mentioned in my previous reply works...

Reinstall the macOS:

Nothing would be deleted. It's just that items that have become corrupted or deleted, would be replaced or reinstalled back to where they should be. Go Here: How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery - Apple Support

Important:

Create a Time Machine Backup, First:

Prior to the re-installation of your macOS, be certain to backup your Mac using a Time Machine Backup. That way, you can have something to restore your Mac from, should anything go wrong with the reinstall. Use an external hard drive that is at least 1.5 the total storage capacity.

Troubleshooting the Mac Audio:

Verify Audio Devices:

Being the reinstall fixed this, but it all stopped in an instant, verify if there are any audio devices. The install would have reinstalled the drivers.

To Find Out:

  1. Go to: Apple menu
  2. Hold Down: option key
  3. Select: System Information...
  4. Click: Hardware
  5. Click: Camera
  6. Confirm if any audio devices are seen

Speakers are Not Seen:

MacBook Pro Speakers” is the first thing that should be mentioned on the list. So, no, they are seen. It may be a hardware issue(in which case you’ll have to get this serviced. But, before making that assertion, perform the following…

A. Create a New User:

What happens when you create a new user (for temporary use)? Are you able to access the speakers? If so, then it is an mis-configuration somewhere in your current user. If not, then it is an issue with your entire Mac or MacOS.

B. Use in Boot in Safe Mode:

In Safe Mode, login items do not load upon boot, and damaged files (i.e. caches) are rid of and fixed, if existent. So, try this while in Safe ModeGo Here: Start up your Mac in Safe Mode - Apple Support

Why the Issue?

Perhaps the Speakers are Loosely-Connected on the LogicBoard?

If a reinstall doesn’t fix this, then there are non drivers seen, there is nothing to do, but two other things presides from getting this serviced: Perhaps a restoration from a backup or a fresh reinstall would fix this? If those are unsuccessful, then get this serviced.

Getting the macOS Speakers Back:

Two Major Thoughts:

A. Restore form a Backup:

Did you create a backup of your Mac prior to upgrading? Is so, then restore from the backup. If not, then take this as a learning experience, knowing to always backup your Mac, prior making any major changes to your Mac (i.e. upgrading your MacOS).

or...

B. Reinstall the macOS Anew:

The ultimate workaround would be through a new install.

Reinstalling the macOS Anew:

Try This:

1. First, Backup your Mac, then

2. Then, install your macOS Big Sur anew.

3. Finally, migrate it over from the Backup created in step 1

In Depth:

1. Back up your Mac:

Start by Creating a Time Machine Backupof my Mac. That way I could be assured that Incan recover my Mac, should I need the App back or if anything goes wrong due to the removal. So, Create a Time Machine backup of your Mac, so that you can have something to restore your Mac from, should anything go wrong with the reinstall.

2. Use a USB Bootable Installer:

Create a USB Bootable Installer for Big Sur. Delete the hard drive's partition. Then, install this macOS with. Go Here: How to Create a Bootable Installer for macOS - Apple Support.

3. Migrate and Reinstall Data and Apps:

Next migrate it over from the Time Machine Backup you created in step 1 to this new install.

No Success?…

Try a Reinstall of Somoza:

It’s the core audio drivers that are failing. So, reinstall the macOS. If that doesn’t fix this, then contact Apple Support.

I performed a clean installation of MacOS Sonoma using a USB drive. Before migrating my data, I tested the audio, and the problem persisted. I then proceeded to migrate my data. The issue began after the 13.5.2 update. If it doesn't appear to be a hardware problem, I'm considering trying a clean installation of Ventura. (However, I'm not sure if I can restore the Sonoma backup to Ventura).

Downgrading the macOS:

A clean install may do the trick. As for downgrading to a prior macOS version, the farthest you can go back is what was installed on it when you purchased it. This is because the hardware that is installed is intended to work with this reinstalled macOS version, and there after.

As for a Clean Install

A clean install seems the best way, but just be certain to perform the backup creation prior to doing so, as I mentioned in one of my above replies.

What is your understanding as per the whole story ? If its a software issue, My AirPods and Sony headphone are working fine without the need of killing coreaudiod. This happens only for the speaker.

Doing a clean installation to the version that my mac came up is bit risky as I may face many softwares incompatibility issues since my Mac Model is 2020. I also have a doubt on restoring the backup to previous versions (Big Sur) where the backup took in Ventura. I meant the backward compatability.
