ID management

We have an iPhone 11 Pro Max and a iPhone 13 Pro Max using AT&T service. They sort of connected so that any new app gets added to both. However, I am always confused about using our Apple ID’s and have generally avoided even using them at all. I have one ID set with my primary email address and a second using cloud.com address where both phones get backed-up to. I may also have a third ID using my name, but am lost when trying to use it.

I have recently purchased an iPad Air, and had a lot of trouble just trying connect with any of my Apple ID’s, but at least got it downloaded from the cloud.

My big question is do I use a single ID for me on on all three devices; two ID’s, one for me and one for wife; or an ID for each device? This is important because I’d also like to set us up to use the Apple Wallet to do our finances and will need some help with that regarding which ID to use.

Hi RonBK,

We suggest that each family member have their own Apple ID. Please check out this link, which explains why each person should use their own Apple ID, and what to do if you want to share purchases or subscriptions with family: Make sure that each family member has a unique Apple ID

Avoid sharing an Apple ID

Apple recommends that you do not share your Apple ID. Instead, set up Family Sharing so that each person uses their own Apple ID. This way, your family can share purchases, subscriptions, and more without sharing personal information like email, text messages, or passwords.

If you share your Apple ID with a family member, certain services will treat you as the same person. You might see these issues:

* Apple Music family subscription: Instead of receiving your own membership with your own library, you’ll share a library and recommendations with the other family member.
* App Store, Apple Books, and iTunes purchases: If Family Sharing is ever stopped, the owner of the shared Apple ID will keep all purchases. You might lose access to everything in the account, including purchases you initiated.
* Apple Podcasts, Apple Books: Podcast episodes and bookmarks might sync according to the other family member’s preferences or be accidentally deleted.
* Messages: You might receive text messages that are intended for your family member.
* Fitness: You might see Health details, Workouts, and Fitness+ recommendations intended for your family member.

Thanks!
