Properly Buying an iPhone:

You should take this back to your friend, and have him perform as instructed here, including the iCloud logout: What to do Before you Sell, Give Away, or Trade in your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support. From there, you set it up as your own device. Once you are logged in to iCloud on it, see if you no longer get this error.

So, whose device is this? Is this a used device you are talking about? It is your device, and you just cannot log in to iCloud with it?
