I did a little more research.
I was also told by Apple Support that "Synced Content" did not contain any duplicate media files.
So I deleted my entire music collection on my iPad.
Both Music and Synced Content dropped to 0 byte usage.
I got back over 12+GB of storage.
Then I download, via a USB, all of my songs to my iPad - about 6.2GB
Lo and behold, both Music and Synced Content were 6.2 GB for a total of about 12+ GB.
So...either Apple Support lied or they really don't know anything about the new storage category called "Synced Cotent".
I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and presume they are uninformed.
The larger question is why the developers of ios 17 decided to penalize Apple users who seek to manage their own media by double counting and unecessarily using resources.
I can come up with no technical reason why this is so since this "feature" did not exist prior to ios 17.
I also ran the same test on my iPhone with the same result.
My iPhone is an older model and I've been contemplating a new device.
However, I am reluctant to be forced into buying a device with more storage than I actually need simply to accomodate an apparent flaw in ios 17.
So I'm looking at Android for the phone or possibly a separate song player device for use when I travel and delete my songs from the iPhone.
I'll keep the iPad and live with the impact because I don't add a lot of apps to it. I use it mostly for browsing and reading.
Really not a nice tactic - especially undocumented and leaving your support associates having to take the brunt of the criticism.
My synced content storage is 35 GB.
It is resolved - synced content and Music no longer show as double counted.
No it’s not fixed! I’m on 17.1.1 and I still have over 100GB of synced content. I only have 1.7GB of music so it’s nothing to do with double accounting!
Yes I agree. It’s not fixed whatsoever. I also checked after the update.
Fixed on my M1 12.9, cellular Mini 6, 14 Pro Max all on 17.1.1. 16GB of music (ripped CDs all) shows only as synched content.
It’s incredibly stupid to lose TWICE the space for half the music. If I can find a 3rd party software that will eliminate this problem once and for all, I’ll do it.
Has this been fixed, I am still having this problem and Apple Support still clueless. Took me ages to explain…
My synced content is using 13.7 gb since 17.1. It’s double counting my music. Reduced my available storage after this update.
since updating my IPad Air to IPadOS 17.1.1 system data storage fluctuates wildly between 2 and 6 gb.Why is it doing this. Also response sometimes is sticky and device does not respond.
I was looking for a response from Share3141 (since he is in the same shoes) or anyone who tested an app for that.
I already tested many with no luck.
Share3141, is iMazing able to manage mp3 music saved locally?
I am frustrated with the same as you and have not found an answer to my saved music files, except to use iTunes to sync.
Yeah, I don't own any of Apple's music and the limited access to the Music app is infuriating. iTunes and iMazing are the only ways I am aware of to get your own music into the app.
I am going to delete all Apple Music and my own library, and just use "Tidal,"
We cannot let Apple dictate what we have on our Equipment.
I have the same issue. Have lost a whopping 17.53 Gb!
