Sound Check not working on macOS Ventura 13.5.2

At some point over the last several months, Sound Check has stopped doing anything on my Mac. One song will play at a "normal" volume, the next super quiet forcing me to turn it up, and the next song really loud, blasting from my speakers and scaring the crap out of me. I've tried turning Sound Check off and on again, ensuring all the music uses the same EQ settings, restarting the computer, logging in as a different user, and more. It happens with both music from my own collection as well as streaming music from Apple Music. The strange thing is that the volume even varies with songs on the same album. Any other suggestions for a fix?

Hi ndelc,

Since the issue persists with a different user, let's try to narrow this down and isolate it more by testing in safe mode.

Safe mode prevents certain software from opening and also forces the computer to run some disk checks similar to First Aid. This can actually resolve some issues. More information on starting to safe mode and steps to take after starting there can be found here: Start up your Mac in safe mode – Apple Support

"On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Shut Down.

Wait for your Mac to shut down completely. A Mac is completely shut down when the screen is black and any lights (including in the Touch Bar) are off.

Press and hold the power button on your Mac until “Loading startup options” appears.

Select a volume.

Press and hold the Shift key, then click Continue in Safe Mode.

The computer restarts automatically. When the login window appears, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar."

You can find these steps along with other information that may be helpful, here:

If you have followed the steps correctly and you still have the issue, let us know if you get any specific alerts or error messages when trying, as those may help us determine what might be causing the issue.
