My Macbook air has unauthorized software that keeps popping up. Can't get rid of it. Obvious virus but

By the way, the Genius Bar addresses hardware/repair issues; software issues can be addressed here in the forums or with online Apple support.
There are no known viruses in the wild that can infect macOS.
It's not a virus. Most likely a bogus notification from a web site you were conned into allowing notifications for.
What unauthorized software? Is it perhaps just an alert when you visit a certain website?
Many sites will issue scare tactic alerts to get to buy a product you don't need. What exactly is the wording of the "popup".
