Hi,
If you have another keyboard, connect or pair it if it works. If it works, your keyboard is malfunction.
If it doesn't work either, it's a software related issue, check keyboard setting.
The keyboard is brand new, as is the iMac. It works except that the keys that control volume and screen brightness, etc. do not the volume or brightness on the iMac.
Hi, Jewel1950-I think I get what kaz-k wrote.. If you have another keyboard, eg, a Bluetooth one, then connect it, if it has a usb cable of some sort, to your iMac, or pair it via Bluetooth to your iMac...I presume you've made your iMac discovereable under Bluetooth preferences, and that you already have a bluetooth keyboard of some kind/brand paired with your iMac via Bluetooth... if you try another bluetooth keyboard, then the original bluetooth keyboard is defective/malfunctioning, if it doesn't work either, it's a software related issue, check keyboard setting, especially System Preferences>Keyboard...if your bluetooth keyboard doesn't respond, then click on the device, then under Bluetooth options (looks like a "cog") click on "Forget" then choose the bluetooth device you want to forget (or remove temporarily) turn off the keyboard via its power switch, and wait a bit....say about a minute or so..., then turn it on again...and attempt to pair it with your Mac Via Bluetooth... or use the usb cable which might be included with it.... Apple keyboards may have a spare short usb cable to connect to your Mac if bluetooth doesn't work... you are using an Apple branded (Apple Brand) keyboard, yes??would this be it?it does come with a USB to LIghtning cable....for basic use and charging....this may also help you:
@caveduck:
" I just experienced the exact same problem, but with a USA magic keyboard purchased in November 2022, paired with a 2019 MacBook Pro 16" running Monterey. For no apparent reason, the F11 key started toggling a Mission Control function to hide all the open windows instead of decreasing audio volume. Searching the forum here shows that this problem is fairly common and affects various Mac models.
After trying PRAM and SMC reset along with Keyboard preferences adjustments without success, I discovered that all I had to do was to open System Preferences | Bluetooth, disconnect the keyboard by clicking the little (x), and reconnect the keyboard. "
This does make sense as a remedy and I hope that people find it useful!
well, I tried...

If you are running Ventura, open System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts… > Function Keys and make sure "Use F1, F2 etc…" is disabled.
Just to add, if you are running Monterey or earlier, disable "Use F1, F2 etc…" is disabled in System Preferences > Keyboard.
