it won't import emails and quits

Your comment does not tell us anything, we need to know what mail app you are referring to, the version of Mac OS, etc, what you are importing and where you are importing from. We are not looking at your Mac and cannot help if we have no information from you.

iMac 2017 running Ventura 13.5.2, 786.77GB available of 1.03TB
the mail app is the standard version of MAC OS which now has new features but to able to use them existing mail messages need to be imported, which is where I came in...
and just in case you think its too much data, they are coming from gmail, and the new apple mail app works fine with them on both my iPhone and my iPad
